Governance and accountability: DFID has a substantial portfolio of work on governance, particularly in: security and justice systems, developing effective democratic systems, reducing corruption, public sector reform, financial management, aid effectiveness and accountability. DFID's governance advisors particularly focus on governance capability, accountability and responsiveness, issues around state-building, service delivery of public goods, citizen's rights and freedoms, public financial management and accountability and reducing corruption.

Social Development: However, it also has work in social development which is intimately related to a broader definition of governance work. This includes work on social and political analysis, participatory poverty assessments, and policies and programming for social development. DFID's social development advisors particularly focus on: gender and women's and girls' empowerment, accountability and social protection and cash transfers.
